I made some wooden books and was looking for a theme to enter as an art project in a gallery.
I wanted to finish the books to look like antique books, but I had another idea: I would finish everything else and not finish the books. That way they would be like a lot of other books in my home library. They would simply be “books I have not finished”.
So I finished the rack by using some medium red mahogany dye, and a lacquer top coat. The result is a deep, rich, and smooth finish. A very nice finish.
However, the books remain natural and unfinished.
The project was made from a single piece of alder 2” X 4” X 84”
Footnote: I had an alternate title for this projects. I was going to call it “modern day fossils” implying they were books that reverted to their natural wooden state from lack of use. Since so many people are now reading books electronically.
