I was inspired to try carve a trout for my father for his birthday after seeing freddy1962s trout carving http://lumberjocks.com/projects/103107,I sent freddy lots of pms and he gave me some good advice. The carving is in ash 12”x12”X2” which was hard to carve as it kept tearing out,I did most of the work with my one and only 3/4” inch gouge and I used a dremel to make all the stop cuts.I drew the trout myself so it may not be exactly s in real life but it was good to practice drawing instead of copying one.I finished it in danish oil, when I do my next carving I wll make it bigger as my tools were to big to get a really good finish on this.Bg thanks to Freddy my father relly liked it!

Great looking carving Ashe. May I suggest that you post a photo of your finished project first since that is the first one everyone will see in the projects gallery then post your progress photos.

Thank you Ashe. Great job on the trout! It’s amazing you carved that with one gouge! Ash wood would be extremely difficult to carve, similar to red oak. I think if you had a set of carving knives, their would be no stopping you. Again, looking at the sweep of your one gouge, amazed that you did that. Glad your Father liked it! Hopefully you will continue to carve.

Super carving, Ash!

I’m sure your father will be proud to display this “catch”!
