this is the first project in the ongoing new shop
http://lumberjocks.com/patron/blog/42649
a custom order box my friend wants to gift
as the shop is still ‘in transit’
i made this to check the tools for any refinements or adjustments
that might be needed

it is a black walnut raven (as ordered)
2 1/2” tall cooped on the copping saw
and laid in tinted epoxy

the box is aromatic cedar 4 3/4” h x 5” w x 18” l

this is a new computer (windows)thanks for looking
so to post i needed to have a way to load and edit pictures

got a 17.3 one this time so i can see the screen
without squinting or a magnifying glass

thanks for looking
have a good week

Looks wonderful David and I’m glad to see that you are getting your new shop up and running. The raven came out great too. I love the smell of cedar and it looks fantastic too. My uncle from Fargo had his whole basement paneled with it. I loved going down there.

LOOKS Great!

COOL…

Glad you’re getting your New Shop indoctrinated… :)

You cut the Raven with a Coping Saw?!
... that must have been a maticulous touchy job!
... looks good.

What a wonderful box David. The raven came out great and I really like the idea of tinted epoxy! It looks like sky (as it should).

this is really cool, i’ve used tinted epoxy in the past, and i have my friend gary reach to thank for that, he let me use some colored powder he was working on, and it allowed me to do some awesome work..in fact i used the blue color in the walnut desk i made..i really like the raven, and of course the box, as cedar is so beautiful…glad to see a project from the shop

Nice work no doubt everybody will be raving about your work!!!

I would be interested in a few process pictures if you have them, and possibly a blog and maybe a good practice run now that you have a new PC

I Googled earth you shop progress for an “Eye in the sky” update but it seems Google has not done a run since my last post. Gee that are missing out on some exciting action!

Keep well !!

#1 Congrats on shop and new confuser!

#2 Great Work!

#3 New windows is confusing and frustrating; but when partly figured out— I maybe will have it all figured out in 10-15 years or so. That is if, I am still around! It does a lot of things the old windows did NOT do.

That is a beautiful box and the raven is perfect. I assume the coping saw is like the jeweler’s saw I used to saw out silver figures? Very fine blade and cuts on the pull.

thanks guys

sorry joe and andy
i used my electric ryobi saw ($100)
found the thinest blade i could
and cut maybe 15 parts to the bird
some the size of my little fingernail
delicate cutting for sure

didn’t have any tracing paper
so i taped some wax paper to the computer face
and drew it with a sharpie marker
and taped the drawing over copy paper
on a white sheet of typewriter paper
and marked with a pen
cut all the lines with a razor knife
photo mounted them to the wood
with the grains going different ways
then fitted the parts two by two
till the whole thing was done

not perfect
but i did learn allot

as far as the tint
it is just hobby paint from wally world

a c

So you scrollsawed that bird like a jigsaw puzzle and then put him together?
