Centerline

Project by trifern posted 395 days ago 657 views 1 time favorited 20 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This piece was a personal challenge to move the pith from the rim to the foot and attempt to center the grain in the bottom of the bowl. It was turned from green pecan 6 days ago. It is finished with polyurethane.

It looks like you succeeded with your challenge. I like the results. The creamy white and brown woods contrast nicely and the center graining is interesting. I have not worked with green wood. Do you have to worry about checking or does the polyeurethane prevent this? How does it dry if it’s sealed?

It was dried for 3 days in a brown paper bag and then air dried. It was turned thin enough that it dries fairly quickly.

Joe that is beautiful. I love the contrast in the pecan. It looks like you have that “turning green, then air drying in a bag” process down pretty good. Nice touch on the bottom of the bowl too. Are you rechucking with large jaws to do that?

Thanks for posting it.

i have never used or seen anybody using a lathe before and i definatly woulden’t know how to make a bowl; but even just by looking at that one i can tell it must be a good one

Great piece of wood & turning Joe. Is that pecan as in pecan nut tree?.

Martin, it was re-chucked to finish the bottom.

Grumpy, yes the pecan nuts come from this species.
