This box measures 3 inches in diameter and 3 1/2 inches tall. The inlay is from a scrap of zebrawood.

Very nice. Was this a true “inlay” or was the zebrawood glues to the box top the turned as a dome to reveal?

Depends on your definition of ‘inlay’. I cut a recess into the lid, glued the zebrawood in, then shaped the top. Here is what the dictionary says:

in┬Ělay

verb 1. ornament (an object) by embedding pieces of a different material in it, flush with its surface. “mahogany paneling inlaid with rosewood” embed (something) into the surface of an object. “a small silver crown was inlaid in the wood” insert (a page, an illustration, etc.) in a space cut in a larger thicker page.

noun

1.
a design, pattern, or piece of material inlaid in something.
“ivory inlays that decorated wooden furnishings” a material or substance that is inlaid. inlaid work. “the cathedral was decorated with mosaic and inlay” the technique of inlaying material.
2.
a filling shaped to fit a tooth cavity.
