This is a headboard design by Pottery Barn. The customer has the platform and was planning on getting the headboard later on. There is one problem. Pottery Barn discontinued that particular style. They came to us to see if we could fill the void. We did and went one step farther. We added some really cool lamps.

It was finished in February 2014 using Maple wood.

The color was a little challenge. The customer ordered a sample from PB and had it shipped to us. Since it is a darker color we had to dye the wood first and then come back with a wiping stain and top coat. We even us a dye in the top coat to tweak the color at the very last.

Looks great, and like the addition of the lamps. Great job on the color matching – how many samples do you typically prepare? With something like this and a 3 step process, and with say 3 variations of each step, your samples could get out of control pretty quick.

Yea, sometimes it can be a long process. I normally match the stain tone in the right direction on the wiping stain. Since it will not get it darker enough. I’ll mix a combination of brown and red on the dye to darken it up.

It takes just playing around with it. For example, I am doing one today and I bet we changed the dye 10 times and the stain several and I thought it would be a simple color.

This is amazing. Do you, by chance, have any kind of plans for it? I’ve been cursing my faux-wood headboard for months now.

I don’t have plans for it. Email me at wwbeds@att.net and I’ll see what notes and drawing I have.
