I started with an old beat up cedar blank and was originally intending to leave the outside relatively untouched (like the head to my most recent cedar mallet), but the cracks were going a bit deeper than I thought and had to keep shaving the outside down. I really like how the colors turned out though, the lighter color was shaved down so close to the inner red part that it almost looks like a thin border for the red instead of just one solid piece of wood. Sanded down to 400 grit paper, used two coats of mineral oil, then another two coats of high gloss Valspar protector/sealer stuff.

Evan,

Nice work!! I am amazed at the Colour and how the red stands out but still blends well with the lighter colour, the finish was a good choice. Does the Cedar grow in your local area?

Cliff.
