Every once in awhile I see an opportunity to lock up something that is unusual and this Skull shaped vodka bottle seemed to be just the right thing.
The vodka (if you haven’t seen it) is special in that it was tripple filtered through crushed quartz crystals, and the glass bottle was designed by a french glass blower. How that is supposed to affect the vodka is unclear, but the manufacturer (actually partly owned by actor Dan Ankroyd) figures the 750ml bottle to be worth about $60 CDN.
The puzzle box is made from zebrawood and walnut with dashes of maple. The small quartz crystal on top of the puzzle is removable, being then transformed into a key that is inserted into the holes on each side. If done just right the mechanism will release the lower drawer which will allow the removal of the vodka. Figuring out the entry code for the wooden locking system is another puzzle to be solved. There is a word/phrase that is on the bottle that will need decoding in order to finally have the entry code. There were only two of these made. Shipping liquor over state lines or out of the country is apparently illegal without a whack of forms and extra duty to be tacked on, so unfortunately the customer had to receive it with the seal broken and the bottle emptied. :(
You can see a You Tube video of the solution here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMYKhUnrHPc
If you think you might like to make one (empty bottles are cheap on ebay) for a gift or whatever, you can find plans here: http://woodlockplans.ca/product/skull-cage/
