The second in my Catch-up file… This is “bending” the rules because I’m not QUITE sure it’s done… I may want to add another layer of beams cross-wise over the top but cannot decide between 2×6’s again, 2×4’s for a step down look or lattice for cost and shade, but perhaps not upkeep. I am also thinking about some arched supports from the 6×6 posts.
The posts are in concrete tubes 4’ into the earth i sunk before i laid the patio and are stable as stone. I half lapped the beams a bit to jigsaw them in to place and some over-sized lag bolts i picked up on clearance for a few pennies hold the 2×8s in place. They look cool- but even with pre-drilling were a bear to drive in. The rest is ledgerloc and joist hangers.
i used a template and a big router bit in my new Triton beast of a router and would have built something to help stabilize the whole operation if i were to do it again. Got pretty good with the jigsaw, but that’s probably because i knew i was going to clean up with a template. Didn’t trust myself for the finial shape free hand, but i can see how someone with a bit more skill and daring could do it well enough for anyone as they are not exactly eye-level.
The beams end in an arch pattern to mimic the arch of the patio, and i plan to build a farmhouse table to put underneath it.
As always- I would love your thoughts.
