no finish vs mineral oil

Getting comfortable turning bigger things and using my jaw chucks. The candle holder on left is completely unfinished, just well sanded (which is why my hand print showed up… sigh...). But hey, that’s what Momma wanted! On the right I used mineral oil and I really like how it turned out. The only downside is I still have quite a lot of improvement as far as separating my work from the lathe; I usually get CLOSE to detaching it, then use my dremmel to cut off the little nub. Except in this case my dremmel bit the dust and I got impatient and used my grinder to take the nubs off. Note the crappy beat up top. It doesn’t look BAD, but oh well…

Hi Evangogh, Nice Turning. Don’t worry about the hand prints…..it adds character to the finished Project. Just say to people, after all it is “Hand Made” Ha, ha. I like all the detail you put into the shape. Looks really good. I find that Danish Oil is a great finish to use, easy to apply and can be applied with a cloth or brush and after several coats it brings out the grain beautifully and has a good long hard wearing life and is children friendly and safe if they happen to try to chew on it.

Great Project.

Cliff.

I found the below video very informative myself. I am a new wood turner myself and it seems like my finishing is the hardest part. Good luck to you.
