This bowl was my first commission piece. I was asked to make a special bowl. The customer gave me no instruction on wood color/type and asked me to just come up with something interesting that he could give his mother on her birthday.

The bowl is fairly basic. Twelve segment rings. (I’m aware that in the second picture one of the rings has two segments swapped out of place. Luckily these were not glued up yet!) A solid black walnut base and black walnut rim. The pattern rings are walnut, maple and purpleheart. I offset the rings each time I added one to the stack to create a semi-helix effect. More of a twist, but you get the idea.

I finished it with linseed oil. After it soaked in for an hour I came back with a clean cloth and rubbed it into the wood. I’m very happy with the end result.

Great looking project!!! I like how the woods all work together on this piece.

- sawmill46

The segments are cut at 15 degrees on each side. 30 degree angles when split up over twelve segments.
