The adventures in free-hand routing continue. For a while I had a kind of ugly "No Soliciting" sign I’d made with a white oak veneer over some scraps of mahogany with the milling machine, but it was kind of ugly.
Also, we had some punk say ”... but I’m not soliciting, I’m canvassing!”, so we needed a more comprehensive solution.
Emboldened by my experiences free-hand routering letters for my square dance checkers, I printed up a template, spray adhesived to to a piece of sapele, and went to work. We tested a couple of different colors of paint, to try to match the house trim, a basic black won.
The sapele came from the workshop of a friend of mine who’d just finished restoring a 1929 Stephens wooden cabin cruiser that made the cover of Wooden Boat Magazine this spring, and was moving and cleaning out his shop. It’s nice when there’s a story behind the wood.
I think it came out kinda nice, in the end…
