This is my first project that i designed. Everything I’ve done (except the corn hole boards that don’t count) have been off of plans or someone else’s idea. I designed this and built it from walnut and a couple glass shelves that have been sitting around for a couple years. It was def a learning process. I made quite a few rookie mistakes.

One picture shows where i miss cut the dado. I cut the bottom two perfect, with measurements off the bottom, but not all my boards were cut to length so i cut the last dado with measurements from the top. so the last dado on all five boards didn’t line up with each other. So i plugged them and cut a new dado. This is pretty simple but for me it was def nice to accomplish.

Another mistake i made was the bottom shelf. I made it from solid walnut. I put four inch panels together. It sat around for about a week and started to bow, so i put to stiffeners on the bottom. Well that sat around for a weekend and the wood decided to bow the other way. It wasn’t to bad so i just left it. you can’t really tell. I probably should have set some weights on top while it sat around. The top shelf didn’t bow at all. I think that is because it is 3/4” and the bottoms was 1/2” thick.

Any suggestions or critiques? I’m all ears!

Good stuff man. I’ve been known to cut dados on the wrong side of the line and drill shelf pins in the wrong spot. Twice in a row.

Nice piece! Your design! Great! Murphy hides in my shop and messes with my projects when I leave. LOL! Wood that has figure will also cup, curl and even crack. How long has the wood been acclimating? Sometimes glueing opposing grain will provide counter tension. Also consider using three layers when laminating as the glue joint on each side will produce more stability. Learned that from Charles Neil.

Good luck! Good Learning! LOL! Say hi to Murphy for me. :<)

Thanks. I did design it, but I used a couple ideas from other pieces we have around the house, glass shelves and tapered legs.
