We live in a clay belt so that every year when we turn our garden over despite a decade of composting our soil is still hard and lumpy. Since I am now retired and have more time than sense I thought it would be a good idea to build a raised beds. I made a series of boxes different sizes to create what I think is a pretty good garden. All the boxes are made from 2×6 cedar and as you can see they are stacked 2 high. Next summer I plan to make an arbour at the main entrance and this winter hinged wire cages to protect the plants from the deer. In the spring we can cover the cages with plastic and they can act as cold frames.

I love your raised beds. It is the only way to go when your natural soil is less than perfect.

Very nice. Not only do you get to improve the soil…you make it less of a backbreaking job!

Thanks, I realize that compared to some of the projects I’ve seen here garden boxes are pretty crude but they are functional.
