Worked on this eagle based on the work of John Haley Bellamy of Kittery, ME (1836-1914). His carvings of eagles have fetched up to $650,000 at auction. Carved from basswood and mounted on a Bradford Pear slab. It was painted with some old oil paints we had laying around from my wife’s hobby from 20 years ago. I do not recommend this paint but I was cheaping out to save money. It took 2 weeks for the paint to dry. I applied walnut stain and then wiped it off to dumb down the bright colors and to antique the appearance, then sprayed on semi gloss poly urethane. My wife declared it “house worthy” so, it now resides on the wall in our living room.

What a wonderful piece of ART! You did a great job and I like the pop of color on it too!

Thanks for sharing and keep posting.

Very nice carving, and I agree with Woodman on the “pop of color”.

Thanks, enjoyed the carve and researching John H. Bellamy. We ended up going out to Portsmouth, NH to “Discover Portsmouth” Historical Society to see the exhibition where over 100 original Bellamy carvings were on display. This showing was connected to the new book “American Eagle, The Bold Art & Brash Life of John Haley Bellamy” by James A. Craig.
