I found a pic of a pool railing on the internet and decided to replace the badly damaged railing in my house which I am renovating. Drawing it up was fun and the project seemed like it would be simple enough. Then reality set in. I was unable to remove the original newel post without tearing up the floor (which I just finished laying) or the ceiling in the basement. I ended up building a box around it using rail and stiles. Luckily I just finished building new cabinet doors and had the router bits necessary for this. Next I realized that the wall and the floor are not at a perfect 90 degree angle (why would they be!). Long story short this project turned into a headache and had to be built on the spot instead of my basement shop. Somehow each angle was a degree off from the other. In hindsight I probably should have spent the time and money on decent lumber instead of ripping warped 2×4s down to 2×2s. It was definitely worth it in the end though.
