This was my second ever project. My partner and I have alway been stuck with ‘flat pack’ furniture as we could not afford the $ for decent book shelves. It took me a weekend to make and about 1 week to stain and sand and stain and sand and… you get the idea. Then it was relegated to stay in the workshop for another week so the smell of the varnish and stain had dissipated.
Made from simple pine the stain, I feel, worked well and is a dark mahogany stain. My, then, 6yo curled up in the shelves to test there strength.
Things I learned
- making big objects is fun but you need help getting them into the house after :P
- It is better to dry fit first than have to make on the fly adjustments.
- I needed more practice with the router!
- It is worth while spending the $ on a decent router and bits.
-- The wood slayer - Yes dear I did plan to make more kindling out of that wood I have been drying for the last year - honest!

Nice looking book case! You did an excellent job staining this piece. Pine often will look blotchy but yours looks great!

You did a great job on this and should be proud of it. I would like to thank you for your comment on my mirror, and what you said touched me. Don’t feel you will be behind everyone in what you know, there are many I’ve seen on LJ’s that can’t do as well as you do. Some don’t seem to care, and others who have less abilities than you feel that you have. It has been a very long road for all the things I’ve learned, and I’ve been in art since I was a young child. God gives all of us “gifts” and I was blessed with talents that He gave me, especially in being creative, I may take pride in all I accomplish, but I know where to give the credit of what I make. I also did not make the beautiful wood or stone that I get to work with, but the real beauty lies in it and not so much what I do with it. You have talent to be proud of, and I would like to put you in my buddies list to see what you make next. Have a great day and future in your woodwork.
