Project Information

After building a new deck this summer, I realized that it it would be nice to have smaller table by our zero gravity chairs - to be able to put a bottle, glasses, a candle etc.

This one is made of nice-looking heartwood cedar boards (I love darker color of heartwood cedar). Slightly tapered legs, tenon and mortice joints. Finish: Sikkens Cetol Marine, carnauba wax.

Picked Sikkens product for finish as everybody says it is the best for outdoors furniture. Did not particularly like its orangish tint - in my opinion, on dark cedar the clear finish looks best. I sprayed three layers of shellac on a scrap piece - it looked fantastic. Too bad shellac is not for outdoors.

Nice looking table, the cedar is a good color. Outdoor finishes are always interesting. Will you have to treat the table with sikkens every year or two?

Thank you. Yes, as with every other outdoor treatment, it needs to be regularly refreshed. I hope it could hold more than 1-2 years between treatments - here in western WA, we don't have too much sun to worry about quick discoloration by UV :) Let's see how it withstands our rain season though.
