This was an unusual request from one of the people I do work for every now and then….He called and ask if I could build a set of steps to go by the bed, so his animals could get up in the bed to sleep…..What..!!! I told him I guess so, and procceded to get the info I needed to start….How many steps, how high, how wide, finish, etc…I said “By the way, how many animals do you have”..? He said 6 dogs, and 4 cats….and they all sleep together in their own bed….!! Holy crap…!! How do they not kill each other….?? The steps are 3/4” Birch ply…..To make everything come out square and even, I cut each piece seperately of the same diminisoins…..2 sides for the bottom steps, 2 for the next steps, and so forth..Glued and pocket screwed each together…The first step is 3” high, the next is 7”, the next 11”, and the last is 15”, with a final step, totaling 16” tall and 16 ” wide….The steps re 3/4” ply, and the backers are 1/2”.....I put on 2 coats of tung oil for protection, which wouldn’t last long (with claws, they’ll chew up the finish).....He were happy with it, the animals can now go to bed, and I made a few sheckles…....Here’s a few pixs of the project…Forgot to add that for the raw edges of the ply, I used Bandit It iron-on edging…..Easy peasy, nice and easy…..!!

I love animals…...........a lot

I take care of my animals

But not all animals are pets

Many people turn animals into pets

Some people treat their pets like they would children

I am not being critical of your customers, but I consider this a little over the top

(Wild Guess…............childless couple ????? )

Bruce, I’m with you….I like most animals (don’t like cats), and don’t own any, but like you said, some people treat their animals like humans, which is their business…My wife and I have benn married 38 years, and never owned an animal…..But to each their own…..Hey, I don’t try to ask questions, I just build what they want…And no, as far as I know of (my wife knows), they have grown childern and grandkids…..So they’ve never been childless….just empty nesters, I guess…...

No project is a dumb project ! If you enjoyed it and maybe even learned something along the way, how can it be dumb ? I will defend you against yourself ! Great job on your awesome steps !!! Looks like a pretty nice finish on those steps also !!

Rick … I hope they at least have a king-size bed!

We have two cats, and one or the other of them will usually sleep at the foot of our bed. When they can’t get up on the bed anymore there will be plenty of room on the floor!

We have a 12 year old Yorkie, and except for the first few weeks, has slept every night of his life in bed with my wife and I…and there have been a few nights when the King Size bed wasn’t big enough for the 3 of us!!

having experience (1 dog in bed and only 1) I would have asked to have the steps covered in something like carpet. But it is funny to hear them slide off in the middle of the night.

@Tom Farmer:.....Well. maybe dumb wasn’t the right word to use on the project….a dumb request I thought at the time, but hey, I don’t argue with the customer….As far as the project went…I really enjoyed building the steps, and it was a fun project, and I did learn a couple of tricks while doing it…..Thanks for the nice comment..

@mccoyfrog: Nothing wrong with the floor…I slept on quite a few pallets in my youth at grandmas house….Thanks for the comment….It was a fun build…..I enjoyed it, but I always enjoy building stuff, like we all do…..I get some jobs through my wife’s beauty shop, and I hear all the animal stories….Some are extreme…..

@ Chris Cook: That’s what I told them too that they might need to get a covering for them, as they would be slick…...

@Obed: Nah, they aren’t odd….just old….Where I live in the mountains, we have plenty of old, retied folks…..If it weren’t for some of them, I wouldn’t get a lot of work…...Maybe a little excentric…...

We have a 7 year old Doxie and is starting to have trouble jumping up on our bed. (Yes, she sleeps with us) It’s a problem inherent with Dashunds, combination of back and hip problems as they age.

I’m currently building a ramp for her, as I did for her predecessor who live to be a ripe old age of 17 (which is pretty darn OLD IN Doxie standards.

I’ll be posting it in a few days when it’s done.

Nothing…... I repeat…... NOTHING that is utilitarian (no matter how “simple”), “mundane”, and puts a few bucks into your pocket is dumb. The ONLY thing that falls into that category is throwing away “supposed scraps”. Nice job!!..... and I’m sure you made a few animals, and their owners, quite happy.
