Maple and Walnut Box

After finishing another project, I had a left over piece of veneered walnut. I thought it would make a nice box top. I pulled out the last of some birdseye maple scraps and put it together. More than likely it will be a Christmas present for my grandmother. Enjoy!

That’s a homerun! But if you would put a matching pen in that and your going to hit a grand slam!

Nicely built box. Did you colour the splines?
How thick is the veneered top?

I have 4pcs of quilted maple (1/8”T X 5”W X 24”L), bought a year ago, haven’t got idea what to do with it.

Thanks for the kind words.

The splines are walnut. I cut them on the tablesaw using this jig. I have a spline cutting jig which makes these cuts very easy.

The top is 1/4” MDF.

I really like projects that are simplistic in their design. This does not mean that aren’t beautifully crafted. Your box is elegant and your choice of woods and grains is perfect. Nice work!

Beautiful piece, simple and refined. Excellent combination of design elements and wood choice.

I like it! Simple but the design is effective and eye-pleasing. What did you use for hinges – the kerf cut small box hinges that Rockler sells? I have looked at those hinges several times but feel that $43 for the blade and another $43 for the arbor just seems a bit ridiculous to me!

Keep up the nice work!

Jim,

The time they save is worth the money. I use to mortise the hinges by hand or on the router table. Those hinges are incredibly easy to do. Just my two cents :)

Thanks again everyone for your interest!
