Wow, that’s a fantastic looking knife block. I’ve seen this concept in the store, but with some ugly plastic inside (and much much lower craftsmanship). I never would have thought of using skewers, it really gives it a nice look.

hmmmm, christmas is coming up soon… tihnk I might just have to make a few of those . Are the Skewers attatched at the bottom or is it simply friction holding them in?

Ned, the skewers are simply friction fit in. I think I’ll have to remove a few of them since once the knives start to add up things get a little too tight. Also important to note is that a few of the skewers sometimes follow a knife part way out of the block. Not a big deal, just push them back in with the flat side of the knife. While trying to think of how to attach the skewers at the base but still allow them the movement they needed, a friend of mine suggested a thin film silicone at the base. If it becomes a pain pushing skewers back in I may try this approach.

Cool. I saw something similar in the Lee Valley flyer that I just got. Very nice idea. I have a lot of nice kitchen knives, but they are by different manufacturers. This sort of block is a fantastic solution to the odd set issue. As an added bonus you never have to go looking for shrimp skewers at the last minute :-)

Devin – great looking knife block. I’m going to be building a knife block in the near future, so I’ll definitely consider this approach. BTW- glad to see you are considering building a Crokinole board, be sure to post the final results if you decide to do it!

I was looking to build a knife block to go with a cutting board and was planning to custom make each slot for my knives, but this is an idea i may have to try. thanks for sharing and nice work.

You’ve just given me a great idea for a “request” I had to build a knife block once I get my shop up and running….very, very nice design.

Thanks John, it’s become a very well used part of our kitchen…AND I didn’t have to fuss around with cutting little slots and laminating pieces together to fit particular knives.

I’ve seen similar versions in a store with the plastic ‘scewers’ the look didn’t turn me on but this really does. Great job! I’ve added to my favorites as I will try this one day as well. Thanks for posting.

Hey Larry, thanks for comment. I don’t have any real plans, I did sketch a bit and built a prototype before starting in on the real one.
