I decided to build my 5 year old son a desk so that he would have a place to work on drawings and legos in his room. It has a couple of small drawers for items like pencils and stencils, and a place to put blank paper or coloring books. The whole thing is made from birch plywood and pine boards, and is mostly assembled with pocket-screws. Most of the design is limited by keeping the desk proportioned for my son. I wanted something that would fit him well, but still have a couple inches of room for him to grow.
This desk took me a couple weekends worth of free time to build, and another couple weeks to paint, stain, and finish. I made a write-up about the project with some dimensions on my website at www.bobek.net/joe/woodworking/kids-desk/
