I was looking at the fire wood I was making and it dawned on me many of the pieces would make great push sticks for things like the band saw, where large push sticks were not often needed, but there is still significant danger of injury.

I like these because they are fairly small and easy to use for working wood near the blade. I find myself reaching for them often.

Never heard of finger push sticks, finger food which I am a huge fan of, but not finger push sticks. Not sure I would use them but very interesting.

I bet you would use them, if you have a band saw and they were given to you, or you made them. They are great for getting near the blade. For example, I turn one over, so the rounded side is held against little pieces, near the blade, to hold them against the fence. Then I use them to flick pieces out of the way or off the table.

I’ve used them with my Hegner scroll saw, when the regular hold down wasn’t practical.

You can make them whatever shape suits your tastes. Some of mine have birds mouth/notches in the end, to make it easier to get on the end of a pieces of wood, stay there and push.

As for the name, they take the place of fingers, are about the same size, though longer, so, what the heck. I’m open to other names. Damn stick even works ;)

I put a small brad nail in all my push sticks and clip it off real short with side cutters. The tiny point prevents the stick from sliding on the work piece. Just a suggestion!

Kelly, this is so much better than scrounging around for a small scrap! Falls under the heading of ‘Why didn’t I think of that!?’ Gonna make some. Thanks for sharing and the inspiration.
