Project Information

Hello! Here is a handmade headboard, footboard and full bed I made for my wife when we got married in 2012. It's a king size headboard. We did a national park tour for our honeymoon and this headboard is a little memory from our time up in the mountains of Yosemite. The headboard and footboard is from solid pine. The headboard and footboard are laminated to a thickness of 4" thickness. The headboard started as one major slab. I'll post some more pics in this thread of the beginning stages. The carving was done 100% by a hand router and hand gouges/chisels (think I cashed in on my 2 year PC router warranty on this build :) ). No CNC on this one. The text was also done by hand. The carving recess is about 2.5 inches. Was able to really get some nice 3D feel. Was able to carve clear underneath the main branch so it looks like a separate piece. I covered the carving in 1/4" tempered glass. One nice thing… its hard to dust a carving that has lots of texture. No need with the glass :) The posts are approx. 4" x 6" laminated. The headboard & footboard to post joinery is a type of mortise and tennon. I will post some pics of the build or maybe blog about it. It took several months to finish this with most of the time going to the carving. This has been my biggest project to date. I recently moved and this was quite a task putting this in a moving truck :) I guess that is the one bad thing about big hefty furniture. I hope to make more of these for customers, but no takers yet. Thank you for looking.

Very nice Scott. Yosemite is great. Wish I could have seen more of it. Gotta love Yellowstone too. I got to fight a forest fire in Yellowstone, a childhood dream of sorts.

That is phenomenal work, never expected pine to look that good. That carving must have taken ages.
