My old boss and very good friend from the Air Force retires in October. He didn’t want a shadow box, so my squadron of 38 years wrote a letter to the Oakland A’s organization asking for a signed baseball by Sean Doolittle and Brandon Moss. They sent the baseballs along with a personal letter of appreciation for his service. I did a shadow box and presented it to another very close friend last month at his retirement. When the folks from my squadron saw it, they told me the story and asked me if I could do something with the A’s stuff. It took a little thinking but this is what I came up with. At first I was told one baseball with two signatures, so I based the plan on one baseball. I sent the gal that asked me to do it, and she asked if I could add more A’s stuff to it. Of course, stickers were out of the question. I did find 3 coins in a collection they had, and came up with an idea to change the base to accommodate 2 balls. For the coins, I glued and clamped 2 1X3 boards together, gut a 15° degree bevel to display the coins in a more forward position. Then I used my cross cut sled to cut them into equal lengths, used a forstner bit to accommodate the coins. This was what I came up with.
