Simple Walnut Wall Mounted Coat Rack

I needed a place to hang my coats by the front door so they would be handy and make life easier when running out the door. Wood is Black Walnut with Nickel plated hangers. The walnut has some interesting grain that I like. Finish was 2 coats of polyurethane. I didn’t want buttons, plugs or visible fastener heads, so I mounted it to the wall by counterboring and putting fasteners behind the hangers.

Looks nice. I haven’t heard of hanging items by “counter-boring”. I’m trying to picture how it would be done. What kind of hangar did you use to keep it securely placed? Or is it simply hanging on a screw?

I used a pan screw square drive wood screw (Kreg pocket hole screw) and kreg drill bit to inset the head of the screw just under the front surface of the wood. I drilled the hole perpendicular to the surface, not using the pocket hole jig. The coat rack is simply screwed to the wall, “hanging” by the screws.

The screws on the actual hangers are only 3/4” of an inch long and thus aren’t long enough to go into the stud.

Okay, I see know. For some reason, I was picturing a secondary hangar on the back of the board. Yours is a good method for hiding those holes. I’ll do this myself, when I get to my coat hangar project.

Mounting under the hanger, that’s a great idea – betcha can’t guess what I’m gonna do with a few coat racks for my next show ?

Thanks for sharing
