I recently completed this music box as a gift for my wife for our 5 year wedding anniversary. As this is my first “band saw box” I purchased plans from Woodcraft (find them here) I would suggest purchasing the paper plan as they have the full size patterns included (I hear the downloadable plans have to be tweaked).
I used a “bowl blank” 8×8x2” piece of Padduk for the body and some air dried walnut for the top and bottom (I like how the air dried Walnut has both the heart and sap wood colors).
I found a high quality movement here
There where several new techniques that i learned from this project including:
1) Building a basic band saw box
2) Using hidden hinges
3) Applying flocking
4) Getting a music box movement to turn on and off when the box is opened
5) Knowing when to walk away from a project for a few hours so it does not turn into expensive kindling
The total cost was about $150 including the plans/movement/ and hardware. It was a fun project and I learned a lot. Made the Mrs. happy too. Now I can’t wait to try a more elaborate band saw box. Thanks for looking.
