Mission Bed - Biggest project to date

Project by Countryboy posted 408 days ago 399 views 2 times favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

This is my biggest project to date and took me over a year to build – It survived two different shops since I moved in the middle of the build. I love the mission style and bought a mortise machine just for this. Another learning project. This is flat sawn red oak with Waterlox finish. Next time I’ll use quartersawn white oak and will try a different finish.

That is a nice looking bed. Do you have pictures of the finished project?

I really enjoy arts and craft style furniture but I am sure the novelty of making all these mortises wore off after awhile. :)

Nice job.

Jaxx – It’s all mortise and tenon – Not what the plans called for but what I wanted to do. Some of the slats (3/4” by 3/4”) were not tenoned on the ends. Just slid in a 3/4” mortise but after a couple boards of this I noticed you could see some of the gaps left from my poor mortising (first time I’ve mortised) After that I cut a tenon on the end of each slat (I call them spindles) so the shoulder of the tenon would hide any loose mortising. The piece is held together by the joinery of the frame so I could accept loose joints on the spindles as long as they didn’t rattle or move once glued.

Scott, I do have finished pics at home that I will add later this evening – I’m at work now – shhh – don’t tell anyone.

Thanks for the comments guys – I’m really proud of it even though I know it could be done much better – and it will be the next time – the next one is for me!!!!!!!
