Hello , I found some pix of a clock that I made for my best friend on his birthday last year . Curly Maple never ceases to amaze me ! How is it that the piece is perfectly flat , yet the grain is so fluid looking ? The pictures don’t do this justice as the lighting wasn’t right to capture all of Mother Natures beauty . I didn’t tell him that I recessed a 2007 penny behind the clock so when he needs to change the time or the battery dies , he will have a nice surprise looking back at him …. The finish is Minwax Wood Sheen Natural….very easy to apply and it doesn’t darken the Maple as other products do . Comments and tips for improvement are welcome : ) Thanks for checking this out !

That’s a good idea, just take a beautiful piece of wood and showcase it with something you always look at . I love the different types of maple and love it’s accents around the house. I love to include it in all the projects I can. That’s a nice chunk.

The penny is an awesome way of perhaps dating all work done by someone. I just love that idea, as far as curly maple, It has just got to be one of the most beautiful wood out there. This is a very nice piece, thanks for sharing!

What a beautiful piece of wood, and a great looking clock. Someday I hope I can find a decent price on some figured maple – I’d love to try it in a project.

Hi Dusty;
Beautiful clock!
I agree the look of curly maple is awe inspiring. It imposes a feeling that I need to be extra careful with my craftsmanship so as not to detract from the incredible beauty of it.
I have pieces in the shop I just can’t bring myself to use!

So simple, So elegant! I have a chunk on Birds eye maple sitting around. I had no idea what to do with it. I think you just figured it out for me. Well done, keep up the good work.

I LOVE figured maple. My only critique is: “Where’s mine?” I really like your design, simple and elegant.
