This project was a second project for the client I made the “Neubauer Bed” for. It was designed to compliment not match the design of the headboard. My initial design incorporated repurposed apple crates as drawers but they wouldn’t allow for the storage the client desired. Back to the drawing board…I emulated the design of the crate into the casework of the nightstand, made Baltic birch drawers to meet their needs and mounted them with 100 lb full ball bearing slides. To tie the nightstands to the headboard I used left over barn boards used on the headboard as the tops, bottoms and drawer fronts. Staying with the “looks like it was made from stuff just laying around” theme I used large (5 1/2”) gate handles as drawer pulls. Finish is rust oleum rattle can which provided the perfect amount of spotty coverage to appear as the paint was old.

No apologies necessary for the sideways pix. I just turned my lap top on its side!

I think the re-purposed apple crates is a fantastic idea. The project looks great. I need to make a pair of nightstands for my daughter. Your nightstands have given me a great idea. The re-purposing aspect is also a great follow-up to a lecture I just gave this morning re; not wasting materials, resources, etc.
