Made over the course of several years, I made our bedroom set from red oak. I employed biscuit joinery to edge glue boards and mortise and tenons to join the head and foot boards to the posts. I incorporated the flutes to the fronts of the bedposts, dresser posts and nightstands. I turned the bottom 6 inches of the bed posts and dresser legs, turned the “posts” that hold the mirror and also turned the ball that tops each post. My wife’s prior dresser had a mirror that swiveled and a nice graceful arch. I mimicked that look and decided to carry the arch over to the head and foot boards. The sides of the dressers and nightstands are 1/2” oak plywood. The drawers are dovetailed with the sides and bottoms being baltic birch plywood. I used Minwax golden oak stain with a satin polyurethane finish.

Many thanks Alistair. Yeah, I stood at a dead on 15 degree angle to get that affect on the chest of drawers! Seriously, it must be an optical illusion. As I recall, I WAS standing or kneeling on the bed as I took that shot so I may not have held the camera horizontally.

Thanks Rich. The set was fun to build and the end results quite satisfying. I have a transplanted Bostonian friend out your way. She works in Seattle and lives in Newcastle. I plan to visit her/Seattle in a couple of years when I (hopefully) retire.

The dresser set looks antique, very nice.
I see you’re a Celtics fan, Kevin Mc Hale is a native from our town.

Thanks Dick. Ah yes, Kevin McHale, one of the big three. He was some basketball player. I have a photo of him, Bird and Parish over my right shoulder as I type this. Those were the good ol’ days! And just to keep this within the woodworking arena…how about that parquet floor the Celtics used to play on! lol
