I live in a small town in Indiana and host a family/friends backyard cookout on the last day of our town’s yearly summer festival. Last year I had such a large turnout that I ran out of seating/dining space so I wanted to add another table and benches to accommodate everyone. Our mother became very ill during the 3 months prior to the event and time became an issue as I had to deal with doctors, hospitals, surgery, rehab, etc. and this project was completed at 3 AM the day of the party. No time to apply a finish, but everyone loved the new table and benches. Sadly, Mom passed away 4 days later, but I’m so happy that so many of her family and friends got to see and visit her one last time when they came to the cookout.
The table is 8 ft long and the benches are 4 ft. The tops are made of poplar, not my 1st choice of wood for this type of project, but it was on sale at such an unbelievably low price I couldn’t pass it up. Because they’re sitting directly on the ground I used pressure treated 4 X 4’s for all the legs.
This project will always hold a special place in my heart because of that final family gathering before my Mother’s death.
