Spalted Driftwood Carving

I call this carving, “Eye Was Just Wandering, (Molly’s Uncle)”. I carved this ghoulish guy from a piece of spalted driftwood. Spalted wood gets its’ looks from fungus. The fungus is only active if the wood is wet. This piece of wood is solid now that I removed all of the punky parts and rotten spots. Spalted wood is tricky to carve because of the imperfections and unpredictability of the wood, but the striping and different colors that the fungus gives the wood sure makes for a unique look.

This carving is 7 1/2” tall, 5” wide and 4 1/2” thick. I have this piece listed on Ebay.com. Just go to the site and type “Josh Carte” in the search bar and there you’ll find me. The auction starts at 99 cents and there is no reserve :) I sign and date the back of all of my carvings. This is a wall hanging piece with a hanger attached. I have some of my other work listed in my shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/JoshCarteArt.

Thanks Ashe :) For a carving like this, I use rotary hand tools, more specifically a Foredom. As of lately, I’ve been using a variety of spiral fluted burs and Ruby carvers in the Foredom. I also like chainsaws :)

Josh,

Nice chainsaw work! LOL! Got to get a little spooky with all these heads that take on life from the wood hanging on your walls?

Thanks, Doc :) That is why I have a garage with two stalls- A workspace and a clean space. Gotta get away from those characters sometimes :)
