I feel a little foolish showing this project with some of the terrific projects that have been posted recently, but here goes -
We are going out this evening and my wife asked me if I could make something simple as a gift for our hosts.
I saw this idea in a shop some time ago, and tucked it away for just such an occasion. It only takes a couple of hours to make these. (If you didn’t guess, this is a salad server set.)
The wood is my favorite Aussie wood, Huon Pine. The finish is a natural food-safe oil.

Simple but still alot of work to make. I bet she loved to get a handmade gift like this. What was their reaction?

what a brilliant idea—just keep some wood tucked away for such an occasion and voila a beautiful gift.
Love it.

Something about displaying an eight-fingered set of hands on a woodworking sight just scares me. :-)

Great stuff as usual Don. That’s funny about the 8 fingers though.

I think Don’s been on vacation… not a lot of projects coming up, and he looks like he’s gotten a little “happier”... along with a little more tanned.

MAJOR idea! I’ve got a piece of birds eye maple that has never been straight since I left the store. It has every problem known to man … and heavy birds eyes. This is just the sort of smaller project that could make good use of it.
Hmmm
I could bandsaw curved faces, jig saw the shape, sand/scrape smooth, oil and voila!

That’s pretty cool, Don. I was just thinking that you used Homer Simpson as a hand model.

Well, I’ve never had anyone call me Homer Simpson before, Mate, but that is my hand after a little stylization. But as Charles pointed out above there is something perverse about a hand with only four fingers – especially for a woodworker. (I do have thumbs – LOL)
