A hand made box with a secret compartment. It is made with white ash and cherry. The plans called for mitered corners but I used hand cut dovetails instead. I think dovetails are easier to make than a good 45 degree miter on four corners any day.

Very clever idea for the secret compartment…

Does it hold in place with magnets? dowels?

thanks for sharing

The plans didn’t show anything holding the bottom on. I was skeptical so when I built the base I drilled 1/4 in holes for magnets while it was still easily accessible. However when I routed the rabbet around the bottom of the box, I snuck up on the final dimension to get a nice friction fit. It fit so tightly that I didn’t install the magnets after all. I was afraid that the magnets would make it too hard to pull off. It is held very snuggly now, no slop at all and takes a fair amount of force to get it off. There is zero chance that it would ever come off accidentally. I’ll see how much it shrinks in the winter and install magnets if any wiggle room develops.

Have your say...
