I don’t typically sketch my ideas before carving them. I usually feel like it’s a waste of time because once I can see the idea in my head, there’s no sense in putting it on paper before carving it in wood. I usually think that just makes for more work. I felt like I needed to sketch this idea to really be able to see it. I’m glad that I did because I really love the result :)
This carving is called, “Mother Nature”. There are lots of pose variations running through my head each time I look at this carving. I believe this one will be the first of its’ style with others to follow. This carving is in Big Leaf Maple burl, a wood that I can hardly believe is real because of how unique and beautiful it is. Mother Nature is 17” tall, 8” wide and 1” thick.
As I stated above, I first drew this design out on paper. After that, I drew the design onto wood. I used a jig saw to cut out the negative spaces. Everything else was done using hand tools and sand paper- finished with 3 coats of spray lacquer. I sign and place a hanger on the back of all of my wall art.
This carving will be listed on ebay- search, “Josh Carte” in the space provided on ebay and there you’ll find me :)
