My retired father-in-law was discussing his ideas for two bookshelves for his office. His plans were very basic…simple even…so I came in to save the day (lesson learned and yes humility applied). One and a half very long days later, I had a couple of decent bookcases. Boxes are made with birch plywood. The face frames/trim are poplar. Primed with Zinsser Shellac-base primer and painted with Benjamin Moore Advance. New technique for me was to use a V groove flush trim bit on the edges of the face frame. Can’t see it in the picture but it creates a nice detail. Overall, an enjoyable project, although a bit rushed for a newby to woodworking/hobbiest. Most importantly, a fun time was had by all. There was an understanding though that these bookcases come back to me in the will.

I love these. The arch at the top makes them simple yet elegant. Love that they are white.

The shelves look great. I’m just getting started on a similar project. I love the proportions you chose. Would you mind sharing the thickness of the shelves, face frame and heights of the shelves? I’m pretty new to woodworking and it is really helpful to see projects like yours posted on this site. Are the shelves themselves thick or are they more narrow and it is only the face frame that is thick?
