Makore Box

I made this box out of some figured makore with a curly maple lid inset and dovetail splines. I took my first attempt at flocking the interior, which I was pretty satisfied with. The lid pull is a piece of cocobolo with a curly maple cylinder core.

This is my fourth box so comments and critiques welcome as I’m still learning each time :)

Never used makore. Looks great.
So what are its characteristics?

great looking box! did you use a dovetail bit in the router to make those corner keys?

Your skill is obvious in this beautiful piece… great idea using the maple as color in the lid and the keys… and obvious craftsmanship in the skill with which you brought those detail about.

Details show your creativity, and your execution of those details demonstrate your craftsmanship. Well done.

Thanks for the great feedback!

timbertailor – Makore is pretty nice to work with, definitely a solid hardwood, but not quite as tough as Cocobolo (one of my usual woods to work with).

Michaelgurrado – I used a dovetail bit in my router table and a homemade jig to cut the spline joints. I’ll try to find pics of the jig to post as well.
