A grand piano box that is a design I have fallen in love with and I am currently making more with design changes and improvements as I go.
One change I made is the thickness of the plywood and I am using 3/8” for the next two as I would like a thinner side which got a little heavy with adding the 1.5mm veneers to 1/2” ply.
The box is a kerf bent construction design for the body that is veneered with shop cut birch and walnut veneer .
The lid is a 5mm ply core with walnut veneer on both face and back sides and a maple edge and I carried this color combination into the leg and strecher .
The keyboard is made up of 88 induvidual maple and walnut keys glued to a backing strip and accented with grooves cut with a small dowel saw and likely the most intricate part .
I explored the use of small coil springs as hinges since I could no find barrel hinges in a suiteble size and it worked out well and is a inexpensive alternative .
The last picture is of the simple jig used for this .
The liner is a red upolstery cloth and the finish BLO with a beeswax polish .
Size is about 12”W x10 1/2” D x4” H.

Great looking boxes. Can they hold a tune?

Klaus…...great piece! Are you considering putting in a music box movement? The details are wonderful, especially the keyboard. All you need is a little bench and a stuffed chipmunk in a tux…ha!

That sure is a box of a different tune. Super idea with springs as the hinges. Where’s the bench? Lol Nicely done Klaus.
