Very nice form and an outstanding choice for your blank. That turned out to be a stunning piece of spalted Maple.

BTW…. What hollowing tools are you using?

Great job on your hollow form Kerux. It has a nice proportion to it and the wood is spectacular. Thanks for sharing.

Very beautiful, I can’t believe this is your first attempt at HF. With all the different grain directions especially around that knot it’s a wonder it didnt’ split. what hollowing tool / method did you use? And what kind of chuck?

Thanks everyone… I am excited about this piece.

Tools: Rikon Mini Lathe, Nova Chuck, Monster Straight Tool, Sorby Master Hollow Tool, Harbor Freight 1inch skew that I put on a Lancer grind. And because this is “Spalted” wood I used a 2” sanding pad with my Drill. 60, 80, 120, 180, 220 & 320 grits.

Finish: 2 coates of Shellac. Two coats of Wipe on Poly (glossy) and then buffed and waxed.

You picked a hard shape for the first one! :-)

It looks like you’ve done a great job with the form- one continuous curve from top to bottom and very nicely finished (Hard to get spalted maple sanded sometimes). You’ll want to be careful about leaving the pith in the form if the wood is wet, since it will tend to cause the wood to distort a lot more and split unless you turn it down to 1/8” thick or less. (The most important thing is that the walls are all the same thickness)

Good job!

Your sense of shape is extraordinary. I love the business of the spalted maple in such a simple, elegant shape.
