This was a wedding gift for one of my buddies who’s an alumni of LSU. This was my first end grain cutting board, and my first inlay. Both had there challenges, however it came out has I envisioned it. It was a fun and long project, finished just in time for the wedding.

I used Purple and Yellow Heart

Hope you enjoy!

Looks good, Lance. Did you use purple heart for the inlay?

BTW, I’m working on my first end grain board too, so I can appreciate what you went through with your glue-ups and clamping setups.

Don,

I did, used purple and yellow heart. It was just a long process, a lot of that had to do with my life schedule, not to mention its a tedious projects as well.

I don’t know whether to love this for the woodworking or let my vision be clouded with SEC rivalries…:) I guess I’ll try to be the fan that isn’t short for fanatic. Great job on your first inlay! I can only hope my first inlay will be as nice.

Go Vols! Sorry…I had to. :)

Great looking board Lance. I will be making three of these this year. Did you use a template and router to mill out the letters? I have done about 12 end grain boards so far. These will be another challenge for me. It really looks great. Living in Louisiana means LSU country! Go Tigers!
Thanks for posting! I have been talking about making a LSU board since last year. This is the first one I have seen. What size is the board and letters? The size of the letters in proportion to the size of the board looks dead on.

Ellery,

The board measures roughly 14×23 a little over 1.25” thick. The LSU letters are 3 1/8th inches tall. I cut the letters out first, then taped them down, took a sharp knife and traced them out onto the board. From there I took a 1/16” router bit and free handed all the way up to the lines. I tried originally to use a template, however it was a nightmare.

Good luck, can’t wait to see yours!

Lance,

Thanks for the info. I knew a template would leave a radius in the corners. I will give that a try. I might just have to make a forth one and keep one for me. I have been using 2” turning squares. But I have a local supplier that has great pricing on Purple Heart. Guess what I have a lot of. My boards are about the same height when finished.
I also have some Yellow Heart, and some Osage Orange. I think Yellow Heart will look better for this application.
I have only made end grain boards so far. A lot of work, but they have all been gifts. Most people do not want to use them. But I encourage them to. I work too hard for them not to enjoy them. Thanks again for posting.

Hey guys: Isn’t it supposed to be Geaux Tigers?!

Whatever the case, that’s a great looking cutting board! It’s getting me revved up for college football season!
