Shine On You Crazy Diamond

A box designed and made in memory of Syd Barrett, founder member of Pink Floyd.

Construction – EZ Mitre, Shell box.

Dimensions – 100 mm square x 56 mm high x 5 mm thick walls ( 4.5 mm core + 0.5 mm pattern). On a 6 mm plinth/inner.

Materials – Black, Red dyed and natural Sycamore veneer. Birch Ply and Ebony.

Adhesives – PVA, Cyanoacrylate

Finish – Sanded to 400 Grit and finished with Spray Satin Acrylic

Syd (last picture) was a very talented individual. Like a lot of his generation, he experimented with acid (LSD). Sadly for him and us he overdid it and this scrambled his brain. He died in 2006. The box was inspired by a documentary of the making of the album, Wish You Were Here (of which ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ comprises two tracks of nine parts), which was Floyd’s tribute to Syd.

This project has taken a long time (two months) coming to fruition and has undergone many changes and one or two abortive attempts at construction. It is not perfect, there are gaps and pattern overruns. I just couldn’t take it any more. I feared that if I continually strived for perfection I would never finish this box or make another one and that would never do.

Regards
BBM

Great to see production back on line with a superb example of box maker creativity. ...and your always precise craftsmanship. Nice one.

I love it.

It is a wonderful tribute to an immensely creative individual. I am a Pink Floyd fan myself. I always appreciated their amazing work.

Your box is mind-boggling in itself. The mathematics alone is amazing. Beautiful to look at as well.

I am kind of glad it isn’t perfect. Nothing is. It is more of a realistic depiction of life that way.

Thanks for sharing, Sheila

I think it is a sign of good judgement to decide when good enough is good enough.

It looks perfect from here ;)

Beautiful box, Martn. Very clean ‘graphic’ look.

BTW… have you heard the rumors that Pink Floyd may be releasing an album in October?!!!? If the rumors are true… it is to be called, ‘The Endless River’. It has been about 20 years since The Division Bell. I faithfully watch and listen to ‘Pulse’ on a much too regular basis.

Sweet.
Yo Martyn, that looks fantastic. I can not see any imperfections from here, but it is nice to know when to call it good enough.

Nice post,
Steve

I can hardly see the box not speak of any errors. Nice work Martyn and eye boggling.
