This is my first attempt at carving. This box is carved on five sides with vines and leaves. There are two distinct trunks that appear to grow from opposite corners across the sides and over the top. Inside the box is a tray depicting vines and leaves. On top of the tray carving is clear glass, allowing you to place things on top yet see through to the contents below. The wood is poplar and is reclaimed from a cabinet that I estimate to be 60-70 years old.

It turned out so well that I placed it in the Orange County Fair where it took second place in it’s class and is currently displayed.

I am very excited with the results. It was intended to be a Valentine’s day gift to my wife. Needless to say, it came in a few months late.

To me, the box, by itself, conveys a subtleness and mystery. It doesn’t grab attention like most pieces at the Fair, but almost waits with a quiet patience until noticed. Once it has your attention it transfixes you until you are almost compelled to pick it up and see what is inside. It still manages to catch me sometimes : )

It was tedious and often frustrating to make, but the results were well worth it.

Thank you for looking.

This is the first actual carved box I’ve seen on here. Your first attempt is QUITE GOOD! Poplar is a really nice wood to carve. Congrats on the ribbon.

You sure are good for one who had done this for the first time. I see why it won the ribbon.

Quite outstanding—especially for a first carving. Congratulations on your Orange County Fair placement.

Fine art. If I could even pull it off it would take years and years. My hat is off to you, sir.

It’s not easy to carve a classic design onto a box. But you did a great job on this box. Congrat’s.
