Notebook box made from 1/2″ solid cherry with latch for a lock. Frame and panel lid opens from short side.

Nice looking box.

It looks like the panel is flush on top. What have you done to allow for wood movement?

Yes, the panel is flush on the top. Since this box is for notebooks I decided that the top could double as a writing surface if necessary. For wood movement the first thing I did is pick the stock with the straightest grain I could find out of the lot that I had. Then the grooves in the rails and stiles are 1/16” deeper than the tongues on the panel. There is also a bit of a gap (1/32”) between the panel and rails/stiles.
