saw these style openers on another lbj site and thanks to them for sharing. these have rare earth magnets embedded in the backside and will stick to any metal surface like fridge doors etc. another good gift idea. The first one I made for my son-in-law who is a red sox fan.

philip butler, when I saw ‘rare earth magnets’ in the project title, I mistakenly assumed that they would be used to catch the released bottle top rather than it falling on the floor, instead of attaching the device to a ‘fridge door.

However, the idea is perhaps worthy of investigation – would a magnet recessed into the back of the mounting board below the opener magically catch the top as it drops? Depends on the size/strength of the magnet, I suppose.

If it DID work, it would make bottle-opening a truly one-handed (but still tidy) operation :-)

don- yes to your question about a recessed magnet catching the lids. make the hole on the reverse side for the magnet catching the lids deeper into the material (almost all the way thru) than the ones holding it to the fridge. it will catch more than one!!!!!!

I saw an article somewhere ( can’t remember where ) that the guy made the holes for the catcher magnets by fileing off the Tip of a fostner bit to make the hole real close to the surface but not make a hole all theway thru in the center of it. Kind of wastes the bit for other use though.

Have your say...
