I was looking at a picture of a commercially made marking gauge and thought I can do that. The result is in the photos. The center “ruler” sides through a mortice in the body. A cut has been made in one side so the screw can pull the top and bottom together locking the centre in place. Not particularly original as I am sure many others have made a similar device. About 30 cm long. The wood is Rimu. Its not one of my favorites but beggars can’t be choosers.
I do a lot of quick marking out with a pencil, usually with my fingers as the guide. This is a step up on that. I just set the distance, hold the body against the side of the project, hold the pencil against the end and slide the whole thing along. The total construction time was about 30 minutes and all the materials were recycled from scrap. Total cost was $0.
