What to turn, what to turn? Well, I do a lot of mugs, but wanted to branch out a little bit. My hollowing skills leave a little to be desired, so I thought I’d work on them. I didn’t want to get real crazy and turn a vase with a really small mouth. I also wanted to create something my wife could actually use.
We found some fresh Aspen that was being given away up at Mammoth Lakes, CA. I took the Aspen home and drilled out the center of the end grain, then practiced my hollowing skills until I got better. I fitted the stainless steel insert to hide my bad hollowing and viola! I’ve got a vase that holds fresh flowers.
Finished with Watco Natural and Beal Buffed.
Dimensions: 6” w x 8.5” h
Next time I’ll try some colored stains that still show the wood.
Enjoy,
Brodie
