Violin Stand for Little Sister

So back at Christmas, my little sister asked me to make her a violin stand similar to the one in the last picture. So I just finished it this afternoon. There was a lot of thought and a lot of procrastination involved.

I intended to make to box in one piece using box joints and dados to keep the bottom in place. I learned that dados and finger joints don’t play particularly well together. I had to change my plan and made the feet and bottom of the box a separate piece. With the advice of some of the guys here on the forum, I ended up using glue and pocket hole screws to connect the two pieces together. The velvet and cushioning was secured using hot glue. Real high tech I know.

Materials were red oak, stained with minwax dark walnut, finished with spray-on lacquer. Appreciate all the information and inspiration you guys have provided.

Very nice looking. Mind if I copy to make one for my daughter?

It looks great! I like the jointery; nice job on the dovetail.

Hey guys, just saw your comments.

MilFlyer, feel free to copy. That’s what I did myself. Let me know if you want any dimensions or info on what I did.

Surfside, thanks. I wish I was at the skill level for dovetails. This was using a finger joint jig. I’ll get to dovetails one day.
