A customer wanted a picture of these two hearts hung like this. I really liked it and thought I would share it with you all. The wood is Quilted Big Leaf Maple dyed with Oxblood dye made by Fiebings.

Care to share your technique? I’d love to make one of these for my girlfriend.

I want to learn to do stuff like this but so far no one has been willing to let out the ‘trade secret’. Chisels? Which ones? Smoothing everything out? so it doesn’t look chiseled? There is a lot to learn, but I haven’t found the resources yet to start on my own.

Thanks so much everyone! I sure appreciate it.

Scootles: I draw the heart on the wood and cut it out with a bosch hand held jig saw with a T244D blade. Then I rough it out with my Stihl electric chain saw. I have a carving bar on it. Then I use an angle grinder with the orange carbide wheel from Wood Carvers Supply. I take those marks off with a 50 grit resin disk on an angle grinder. I have a Rigid 3” x 21” and a Makita 1 1/8”x 21” belt sander that I use 120 grit with. Then I use a Porter Cable random orbit with 180 and then 220 grits. I use Fiebings leather dye for the color. I finish with Ace brand Premium Enamel and for a last coat I use Satin Deft, both in a spray can from my Ace Hardware store. I will spray some silicone spray on them just before I ship them and wipe it off good. This really gives them a slick feel.

And that’s it! :)

Fun, whimsical and beautiful pieces! I didn’t realize how large they were until you had your hand in the photo on your etsy site. Very nice.
