Project Information

A redwood dining table with a black walnut trim. The majority of the table was made from redwood fence slats picked up from the local Lowes lumber yard. They sat and dried in my garage for about 2 months and then were turned into this table. Lots of fun doing this project with local resources. The black walnut was ordered on ebay from a reclamation guy who pulled these boards out of a barn.

Great looking table. I like the idea of using redwood fence boards. Did you attach the redwood boards to another plywood top?

No - I used all fence slats for the table top (minus the black walnut trip). I just glued up the first layer using a long grain style with buttered ends. Then, I cut the top layer and glued straight down. I liked this approach because it crossed the grain and should prevent warping while maintaining the idea of a "pure" redwood solution. Using a premium piece of plywood would probably have been easier and made the whole project a bit more simple… my wife wants me to make another - slightly smaller as a desk for her. I might try that next time.

Nice work. I like that you used redwood slats throughout-but I have found them to be really thin - guess that's why you used two layers. My dog is still tearing through our redwood fence.
